The name of the group derives from the deconstruction of Gu’s surname, “古,” into the
two characters “十” and “又,” while holding onto the notion of “无”, "nothingness."
Untitled Group extracts, reverses, and exchanges ideas, thereby aiming to return to the essence of things. Through physical experimentation, the group aims to discover the multifaceted nature of objects and the complexity of the world, adhering to the philosophy of going from nothing to something and from something to nothing, the group playfully self- proclaim as an "organization" without organization. The Untitled Group originated from the "Go & N SPACE Body Plan" established by Gu Jiani and Li Nan in 2013, and was further developed with Wang Xuanqi in 2016.
The group's work focuses primarily on exploring the language of the body and the diverse ways in which the body engages with the "drive." Untitled Group believes that choreographic meticulousness is afforded by slow accumulations and polishing of details, even though the group continues to independently produce works in a project-based manner, thereby often working within a strictly confined budget. In addition to creation and performance, the Untitled Group has also initiated workshops and movement courses exploring different concepts. Since early 2022, they have regularly conducted interdisciplinary workshops entitled the "Crossing Project." This project aims to create an open and inclusive space, to expand the group's research on dynamics. Through intensive courses, themed workshops, experimental groups, and other rich structures, Untitled Group actively promotes networks between local artists and shares creations across different artistic media, constantly broadening understanding and adding new dimensions and depths through artistic collaborations.
Over the past decade, the group has been stationed in various spaces in Beijing for long periods of time, while touring prestigious venues including the Shanghai International Dance Center, the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, multiple spaces in Langyuan, Beijing, the Beijing Middle Theater, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Freespace in the West Kowloon Cultural District, Taiwan's Opera Institutions, Norway's Coda Oslo International Dance Festival, the Melbourne Arts Festival, and multiple regions in the United States. The Untitled Group has been invited and commissioned by many institutions, spanning various disciplines. They have also been interviewed and studied by mainstream magazines and scholarly works including publications such as "Vogue" magazine, and "Queer Dance: Meanings and Makings" published by Oxford University Press.
